MONUMENTO A CRISTOFORO COLOMBO - NEW YORK
Ha preso forma a Venezia, pensato e realizzato dallo
scultore Gianni Aricò, il monumento al navigatore genovese che si inaugura il
12 ottobre – ricorrenza della scoperta dell’America – lungo le rive del fiume
Hudson, sull’antico molo di Manhattan a New York.
In coincidenza con la fatidica data dello sbarco del Navigatore
italiano in terra d’America, data verso la quale da qualche anno convergono
iniziative, passioni, discussioni in tutto il mondo e che pare dunque il
culmine di una serie di celebrazioni e rievocazioni, l’opera di un artista anch’egli
italiano approda sul molo dell’antico porto di Manhattan in una posizione non
molto distante dalla statua della libertà.
Il significato primo dell’evento sta proprio in questo affettuoso valicare l’oceano di una scultura ideata ed eseguita a Venezia e offerta in omaggio come pegno di consolidata fratellanza. Rossana Bossaglia |
Il monumento fu inaugurato nel 1992, il 12 ottobre e collocato all' Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York - Manhattan. A causa di una mareggiata che ha colpito l'isola di Manhattan, per preservare l'opera, le statue sono state trasferite a Garfield - New Jersey al Dahnert Lake County Park.

This monument,

October 12, 1492 - 1992
was created in Venice, Italy,
by Italian sculptor Gianni Arrico. The piece symbolizes the voyage of Columbus.
The figure of Columbus sits in the middle. To his back is the Old World,
represented by a Renaissance woman standing at the threshold of
new beginnings, facing him is the New World, represented by
a young woman, awakening from a gentle sleep.
Surrounding these figures is a beautiful murano crystal.
The statues are made of bronze.
The base is white marble from Istria, Italy.
The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum acknowledges the
generosity of the Italian Government and the Italian people,
who have made this beautiful cultural contribution
to the Intrepid Museum Complex possible.
